Wine is a way of life for Philippe Boucheron. For some 37 years he has been writing on the subject. In 1987 he began broadcasting, organising tastings and even taking groups from the Sunday Times Wine Club and other organisations to vineyards as far afield as Champagne and the Cape. He was the 1996 Wine Guild of the United Kingdoms Regional Wine Writer of the Year. He is committed to improving the standards of communication about wines and spirits. He is also very much involved in promoting awareness of the health giving properties of red wine. A keen advocate for maintaining the balance of nature, Philippe is an enthusiastic supporter of both organic and biodynamic wines. A regular after-dinner speaker, Philippe knows that people learn more by being entertained than by being talked at. As a result his talks and wine tastings can be fascinating, sometimes even hilarious, but always informative. In 1999, with Richard Earl of Bradford, he founded the Heart of England Branch of the International Wine & Food Society and is currently branch chairman. In 2000 the Society published his monograph on Growers Champagne, which is understood to be the first publication on this subject in the English language. An enthusiastic Havana cigar aficionado, Philippe enjoys few things more than arranging splendid soirées. These are elegant dinners that conclude with a tutored 'smoke-in' of three choice Havanas accompanied by matching Cognacs, Ports or even Whiskies. |
