Educated
in Rhodesia, Peter 'ran away to sea' as the decade of the fifties drew
to a close, joining the legendary Union Castle Line as a deck cadet.
He served his time on the African, Indian and Australian coasts sailing
in all manner of ships under the House Flag of the British & Commonwealth
Group, Union-Castle's parent company.
Qualifying as a deck officer in 1963, he re-joined Union-Castle as junior fourth officer on their flagship "Windsor Castle". He stayed on with the company for a couple of years before deciding to 'swallow the anchor` and return to Rhodesia, there to seek his fortune ashore. Joining the government, he served as A.D.C to the last Governor of Rhodesia, Sir Humphrey Gibbs, in the period before Ian Smith's Declaration of Independence in 1965. After this event, Peter embarked on a new career in industry, but his love and abiding interest remained ships and the sea. The exploits of the great navigators fascinated him, and he nurtured his love of ships by reading countless books on the great liners that had sailed the seas a few short years before his day as a young merchant seaman. Today, Peter devotes his working life to the cruise industry: with his wife Rosemary, he specialises in arranging Lecture and Enrichment Programs for many major cruise lines, writes a regular column for the prominent consumer cruising magazine "The World of Cruising", and recently was featured in Sandy Toksvig's Radio 4 programme "Excess Baggage", talking about cruising.
